Yes, it's an XC-47C! Ambitious or what? Very Happy

Well Pingu in the cold grey light of dawn ambitious is not they word I would be grasping for.
But armed with a copy of the article out of SAM and some drawings extracted from the William Green Book on Floatplanes and your kind words of encouragement were away.
First job is producing scale drawings for the floats and struts. The article mentions about using floats from a Swordfish I assume its 1:48 scale. I have the 1:72 version so will use the floats as a guide.
Next task will be making the struts, decided that the best way would be to build them up from plastic card strip with a core of brass rod.

Enough for now.

HI, Zimm,

yes, the floats referred to are those from the SMER re-boxing of the Merit 1/48 Swordfish, which are pretty close to the XC-47C's floats in 1/72. Dunno about Oz, but SMER kits are widely and cheaply available in the UK (Howleys has one on the shelves for, IIRC, £4.99).

Cheers,

Chris.

Thanks Chris,
Alas no SMER Swordfish. Have decided to scratch build the floats. 1st try will be to make a balsa blank and plunge mould using platic card sheet. If this fails it will be laminations of plastic sheet
Made progress of sorts today, came away from my LMS armed with plastic card, green stuff and wire. Also a another reference which suggests all earlier references except the William Green book are wrong (Groan). Research is a marvelous thing! Also discussion as whether the floats are 40ft 10" or 40ft long. Target for this weekend is to finish the drawings for the floats and struts.

Pingu
Progress to date. 1st attempt at carving a blank for moulding the floats in the bin. Second blank cramped and drying. Try again tonight.

The actual Dak has now been acquired, sprues washed and drying.
Finishing drawings for struts while waiting for the PVA on the balsa blank to dry.

Cheers Zimm

Greetings Greg,
Taking a few shots as I go, I can see why most authors of articles recommend getting the resin conversion set. Second blank almost done still not entirely happy with the cross section. The three sources I'm using all disagree on this one.

The rest of the model has now had interior painted with the 1st and 2nd coat of Hannats zinc cromate. Need at least 2 more I think to get good coverage.

Well with 13 days to go still lots to be done!
However the blank is ready for the 1st attempt to mould some floats

And the struts are underway

For the rest of the day it will be finishing the interior and making the jig to hold the floats and struts. Will post more pics.

Off to my favourite LMS tomorrow for more plastic card. Then tomorrow night the 1st attempt at moulding! Making sure I cook the steaks before using the griller for the moulding exercise. Mind you in a house with three Cocker Spaniels having a model that smells like steak might be tempting fate!

Well progress is slow. No moulding of floats. Concentrating on the Danish Dak to free up the work table and also cleaning up some storm damage around the place.

With the float version one task required is to fill in the wheel wells.

I have started by blanking off with some card and then adding a spine.

How much more time have we ?

Greetings All,
Apologies for not keeping up todate on my progress.
The weekend was spent moulding carving and moulding. Slight technical glitch with photo's at the moment. Can take them but not download them.
So what do I have? Some wonderfully imperfect molded floats. The top finish is fine but too thin on the edges and of course the concave curve on the bottom of the floats is dam near impossible. Therefore have reverted back to carving a pair. What I have achieved now resembles my sock drawer. ie a collection of socks but not a pair amongst them. Now with not much time left I'll be concentrating on the build. So please excuse my silence. Taking lots of photo's as I go.
Back to my whittling.

Well a fresh day, a cancellation of train service, as such an unexpected day at home.

Decided to have another try with moulding. Last time was top and bottom, this time a left and right side.

1. To begin a new blank or plug. The lines in plan and elevation to scale cut out and then glued on the balsa

2. Plug carved and frame ready

3. Sheet plastic attached to balsa and in the griller, plastic sheet just starting to sag but no vapour being given off yet.

4. Plug insterted

5. 4 halves ready for trimming, just like making vacform now.

6. 1st fit.

Now back to work

Cheers Heinkel51
