I arrived at the International Centre just after 09:20 and things were still fairly quiet. Nevertheless there was already a queue to get into the IPMS Kit Swap, which proved to be a bit of a disappointment, for me at least. Although there were some rare pieces on offer, prices were generally high, the most ridiculous example being a Hawk Comet 4A for £150!
Somewhat to my surprise, the professional kit resellers – Comet Miniatures, Collectakit and Kit Krazy – had little to interest me either, but elsewhere in the hall I picked up a nice Airfix Snap‘nGlue E.E. Lightning F-1A, and the usual flotsam and jetsam such as some old Revell, Selcol and Lincoln decals.
This year the main pleasure of the show was seeing the IPMS displays and meeting old friends. Iain was manning the FROG display when I found it, having broken some kind of record when it took him 19 hours to reach Telford from Aberdeen! Leaves on the track, no doubt.
The FROG display itself was excellent and I wonder how many viewers realised how much effort had gone into creating the show? Well done, everyone.
The Airfix Tribute Forum had a less ambitious but pleasing display of 60 Years of Airfix, which included this nice BT-K and Ferguson:
I didn’t spend much time in the exhibition area, but for me these two were the showstoppers; a Comet 4 converted from the recent Airfix Nimrod, and a 1/20 scratch-built Hawker Tempest. Breathtaking.
